The Solution
The solution to our current income tax nightmare is to eliminate the income tax for 99% of all Americans and replace it with ... nothing.
This seems absurd. After all, the government needs everyone's income taxes to provide goods and services and maintain the common defense. Right?
Well, not exactly. The federal government has many sources of revenue other than the personal income tax. Most of our revenue comes from the payroll tax, the corporate income tax, the capital gains tax, and federal excise taxes.
In fact, the incomes taxes paid by 99% of Americans provide less than 27% of the federal tax base. That's a lot of money (close to $600 billion). But it's not hard to find that revenue by eliminating loopholes for wealthy individuals and corporations. In so doing, we dismantle the IRS and eliminate all income tax filing for the vast majority of Americans, without losing any revenue.
Unfortunately, the top 1% have spent the last 40 years shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class. In so doing, they have amassed enough wealth to have a dominating influence over both major political parties. Tax reform through legislation is not possible in this political climate.
Therefore, we need a constitutional amendment to eliminate the IRS and lock in these changes so that our democracy can return to growth and prosperity.
